Smith, John Phillip
In this groundbreaking podcast, Bone Valley host Gilbert King uncovers startling new evidence that Jeremy is responsible for a string of murders. King is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Devil in the Grove, which led to the exonerations of four innocent men. Bone Valley is a production of Lava for Good Podcasts Phillip John Smith in association with Signal Co. Smith was apprehended after he contacted West Midlands Police saying that he wished to make a statement about Corcoran's disappearance. At the time, however, her body had not been positively identified, and inquiries quickly established that some aspects of his account were false.
The son of sawmill labourer Henry John Smith and his wife Rose Smith (née Luckins), he was the oldest of five siblings. Smith's family lived in Midland Road, where they were neighbours of serial killers Fred and Rosemary West, before moving to Hailes Road on the Coney Hill Estate in 1971. The family had a modest income, and their situation became worse when Smith's father was injured in a motoring accident. Smith attended Coney Hill Infants and Junior School and later went to a special school for children with learning difficulties. He left school at 14 to join Billy Danter's Funfair, which toured extensively throughout the United Kingdom and also employed his father. The 18-year-old was fatally stabbed in her own home and died in her mother's arms.
The Forensic Science Service® (FSS®) played a crucial role in the conviction of Philip Smith who was found guilty of the murder of three women in Birmingham over four days in November 2000. Police tampered with evidence in the case against a man accused of killing three women in four days, a court has heard. He had no previous convictions for violence, but in the space of four days last November, he murdered three women. Relatives of the three dead women - 21-year-old Jodie Hyde, Rosemary Corcoran, 25, and mother-of-six Carol Jordan - say they hope he is never released from prison.
I remember this case and glad some kind of justice finally caught up to this monster. Convicted murderer and child molester Phillip John Smith has been deported from Brazil and will land in Auckland early tomorrow morning. Convicted murderer and accused paedophile Phillip John Smith has been captured hiding out at an international hostel in Rio, Brazil. “Each month I’ll take you inside some of our most infamous incidents, notorious offenders and behind the scenes of high-profile trials and events to show you what’s really happening in your backyard,” she said. A Moment In Crime is written and hosted by senior journalist Anna Leask – who has been covering crime and justice for NZME since 2005. Today, Herald podcast A Moment In Crime goes back to Smith’s escape and explains just how police tracked him down and hauled him back to New Zealand.
Detectives matched the tyre marks from his car, which had four different types of tyre, to the Worcestershire murder scene and to Corcoran's body, over which he had driven. Paintwork and fragments of glass found on Jordan's body matched those from Smith's car, including a broken light cluster which he had thrown into the car's boot.
